Skyler Inn (53 photos)
A long, winding mountain trail leads to this mid-19th century home. A former stage coach stop, The Roosevelts stayed there on several occasions. The home was originally built by a former sea captain, and its many intact architectural features include look out towers, stone fireplaces, carved mantels and railings, paneling from the old captain's boat, secret rooms and so much more. No amount of history nor quirky architecture will protect it from the bulldozers which are coming very soon.

Nanuet Mall Last Call (233 photos)
Now it's official. Effective January 31, 2012, the mall is closed. While the anchor stores remain open as planned, strangely, the two barber shops and Banchetto Feast decided to occupy the mall, buck the December 31st closing date, and remain open. All have finally closed and the demolition has begun (starting with asbestos abatement). Like the best explorations, it involved hiding from security on multiple occasions.

KHAAANNNN!kord Resort Hotel Leftovers (49 photos)
In 2008, the hotel at this location was demolished; the plan was to re-build the site with a billion-dollar race track and casino (big surprise). Despite that, the hotel's main buildings were concrete and steel construction, the owner spent millions demolishing the place and building new foundation pads for the future casino. None of the contractors got paid, so the work stopped abruptly and the empty lot is a "brownfield" to this day. A few buildings remain, and we explore them.

Goodbye Hotel (22 photos)
What a waste. After being away for 5 years, I came back to this. Truly the end of an era for exploring and for Catskills resorts. With the Pines Hotel now gone, with one less Catskills resort in the world, hotels in the Catskills are fading into the past faster than ever. But their time was long ago, and at last memories can rest in peace.

MBUSA @ 23A AKA/BHB&B (34 photos)
Elsewhere described here as the Blue Hill House, this dutch colonial home has stood empty since ca. 1996. Formerly located next to at least 2 other homes on a short dead-end spur of a county highway, all the properties adjacent to the street were purchased by a foreign car manufacturer who has yet to occupy the site for over a decade. The other two homes were demolished ca. 1997. Featuring late 1800 / early 1900 wallpaper and architectural flair. This building was possibly once a bed and breakfast, judging by (now missing) numbers that years ago adorned the interior doors.

Not at all abandoned in fact, the famous Bear Mountain Inn is now a very active construction site. It sat vacant and disused since 2005 to the dismay of many park lovers. After walking through the active construction site, which was far more active than any explorer would prefer, I headed down to Iona Island, practically right down the street, and experimented with some panorama techniques.

Prospect Park Pool (9 photos)
Prospect Park was designed by Garnet Baltimore, the first African American to graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. On February 19, 1903, the city bought the land from the Warren Estate for $110,000. The City Parks Commission hired Baltimore to design the park, paying him $2,000 in annual salary. He designed pathways, a pond, tennis courts, a bandstand, flower beds, and a scenic lookout from which visitors could see a 25-mile panorama of the Hudson River and Valley. The Warren home became a museum, and the Vail home became a snack concession.
Prospect Park is a unique gem in the middle of the city: it provides spectacular, 20-mile, panoramic vistas to the south, west, and north. Rare species of trees, like the Catalpa, European Beech, Hawthorne, and Magnolia grace its grassy expanses; and its history goes all the way back to Uncle Sam.

Palisades Center rumble strips (2 photos)
The ring road at the Palisades Center apparently attracted a lot of speeders. The peculiarly low 20mph speed limit is practically unenforceable, so mall management had the brilliant idea to install longitudinal rumble strips on both directions of traffic. However, whoever installed the rumble strips failed at life, because they are easily avoidable if drivers ignore the pavement markings. Since drivers routinely ignore the markings, and cross the center and edge lines, the danger is increased dramatically.

Just grab a razor... (4 photos)
My Physics professor (Prof. Dwyer), was a pretty rad dude. One day, we were doing an experiment with liquid nitrogen. I asked if I could take home a flask so that I could freeze off a wart on my foot. His reply: "Oh, you don't need liquid nitrogen. Just grab a razor, and carefully slice all around the wart, maybe a millimeter or two deeper than the epidermis, it'll bleed and it'll hurt, and once you got a nice perimeter cut around the wart, take a pair of pliers, get a good hold of the wart, and just rip it out. But I'm just warning you it'll hurt like hell."
He was right, it hurt like hell, but the wart never returned!

Failure to yield indeed (5 photos)
I got a ticket at this intersection for "failure to yield entering the roadway". Clearly, there is no stop nor yield nor any traffic control sign besides a solid line on the ground. Ironically, when I came back to take the picture, I grabbed a shot of a state trooper blowing through the intersection just the same. In court, I was able to establish that the officer ticketed me because I didn't come to a complete stop before entering the roadway. In fact, there was no requirement that I stop. The "failure to yield" violation should have only been issued if I had failed to stop, thus causing an imminent danger of collision, which I did not. The judge ruled in my favor and the violation was dismissed completely.

Mixed message method (1 photos)
An interesting illustration of "speed limit change ahead" combining a yellow warning template with a pictogram of a speed-limit sign, including its full text, assisted by a directional arrow to indicate "ahead". Despite that this is non-standard, I believe it is superior to the far more vague "End Speed Limit" or "End Speed Zone" signs that fail to indicate what the speed limit is changing to.

Testing tire thickness (12 photos)
This was an odd day. Yea, my tires were a bit low. I checked because I rear-ended someone when I had to brake suddenly. The road was splitting into two lanes, but was only 1.5 lanes wide or so. They were heading left, in front of me, and I was heading right. I thought I could make it, but they stopped suddenly. I cut the wheel hard right trying to run over the curb, but it wasn't enough. I hit their rear bumper. This was where it got weird. Three very german men and women, dressed all in black, got out of the car, an '06 Jetta looking nearly new. They chatted in German for a moment before the driver said, "it's fine, don't worry", driving off without even taking my info. As weird as that was, I love New York, and I'll just roll with it. Next time, remember to check the tires before leaving.

Citrus psycho experiment (5 photos)
We've always wondered, what happens if we detonate a small fragmenting explosive charge inside a citrus fruit? We carefully calculated the force necessary to obliterate the grapefruit, then scaled it back so there was just enough explosive force to propel the fragmentation into the flesh of the fruit without annihilating it. Still, the grapefruit burst along a weak seam, potentially invalidating the experiment. In conclusion, there were tiny glass shards everywhere inside the fruit, as predicted.

Starting the journey at the south western end of the mountain, in the Camp Bluefields Dr. parking area, I ventured up into the hills to boldly go where many have gone before. Noticed some new concrete and metal works I'd never seen before, and became better oriented with the "offices" relative to the homes on the street.

McDonald's Southwest Chicken Sandwich (7 photos)
McDonald's simply wasn't satisfied with itself for ruining the menu by removing the McRib: they recently rolled out an abomination of commerce upon the masses. That is the Southwest Chicken sandwich. Imagine for a moment, a McDonald's chicken breast, topped with pickles (and only pickles), stuffed between its usual hamburger patties, all for a bargain basement price of $2.69. I tried one on the day it came out, since they were offering it for $1 (I'm a sucker for a sale). But it was dollar menu worthy, despite the sticker shock I experienced when I saw the item rung through on the POS for $2.69 before the promotion was applied. Verdict: stick to the burgers.

"Ocean City", MD (265 photos)
Dylan invited Joe to stay at his cousin's house on the beach in Ocean City, MD for Memorial Day weekend. In typical style, we actually ended up about 20 miles away in Ocean View, DE, 5 minutes away from the water. Not easily swayed, we still had a blast anyway. Joe and I went skating on the boardwalk when everyone else went out drinking. Dylan's cousin was awesome for letting us crash there. There must have been 20 people there. This girl that Dylan brought was a total fiend, though. At one point, I packed a bowl, even though really she was the only one that wanted it. So I pretended to fall asleep with it in my hand. She had the balls to try and grab it from me, unsuccessfully. I took great satisfaction in making her say "please" repeatedly.

Drey likes to do interesting things, but unfortunately, he's cursed with 7 years bad luck for some reason or another. We went to Letchworth Power Plant and walked around for hours. Then we heard a horn blaring near where my car was parked (at the closed bridge near the active buildings). A rent-a-cop was waiting and started asking questions. He tried to get confrontational but totally backed off after I started asking basic questions in response to his own questions. He sheepishly said, "I won't make you delete the pictures this time." Right. And I won't leave you lying in the fetal position on the ground, this time.

Don't panic (2 photos)
These panic buttons in the parking garage of the Palisades Center are a major point of contention for me. The design for human factors is atrocious. You'd think that by pressing the button, you're summoning help. In fact, pressing the button only patches the intercom audio through to the security office without any other alarm. Not only that, you have to hold the button to talk. That's why it says "press button and talk". Pressing the button isn't enough, you actually have to say something to wake them up. Nice, right?!

Verizon FiOS did underground installation in our neighborhood, but apparently botched the job. ConEd (O&R) and Verizon came out and replaced their copper lines within days. Cablevision for some reason couldn't get the job done, so they just hung the wire up in a tree in my front yard and ran it across the road from there. You'd think it was temporarily, but it sat there for over a month with no action and no one at Cablevision seemed to know anything about work being done in that neighborhood. By complaining about it repeatedly, I did get a response, but it was ridiculous to have to go through all that. It was clearly unsafe.

Highview Playground (51 photos)
Once a stunning example of a community effort to build a playground within what was once the "Second Safest City" in America, Nanuet Highview Community Playground was a unique wooden playground built in the 1990s. Featuring ornate and almost Victorian architecture, the playground used elements like turrets and winding passageways that gave the playground the nickname "the castle playground".
At the age of 20, the school board quietly prepared to demolish the playground, and with barely a weeks notice to the public, announced that the park would be no more due to vague insurance reasons. No serious injuries had ever occurred at the park, nor had any insurance claim ever been filed against the school district. Some staff from the nearby elementary school were seeking to convert the space where the park once stood into a parking lot. However, thanks to a strong outcry from the community, there are already efforts underway to rebuild. Find out more about efforts to rebuild Highview Playground.

Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off – then, I account it high time to get into my car and take random photos around town. The gallery is named "A Challenger Appears" because this time I happened to come across another Shar Pei - a challenger to my favorite Shar Pei - Butters.

A gallery of photos featured on www.Escalators.co, an elevator and escalator blog.
Grouped into situations, events, trips, or other logical batches of photos where I had a camera and shot a distinct set. There are sometimes many similar sets if I did similar things, but on different dates.
Photos sorted by the camera on which they were taken.
Events, with family.
Photos of friends or events with friends
Photo sets that lack cohesion, usually a collection of random point-and-shoot shots accumulated over a few days.
From my time studying at RPI, 2002 through 2006.

Urban exploration (often shortened as urbex or UE) is the examination of the normally unseen or off-limits parts of urban areas or industrial facilities. Urban exploration is also commonly referred to as infiltration, although some people consider infiltration to be more closely associated with the exploration of active or inhabited sites. It may also be referred to as "draining" (when exploring drains) "urban spelunking", "urban caving", or "building hacking".
The nature of this activity presents various risks, including both physical danger and the possibility of arrest and punishment. Many, but not all, of the activities associated with Urban Exploration could be considered trespassing or other violations of local or regional laws.
Ventures into abandoned structures are perhaps the most common example of urban exploration. Abandoned sites are generally entered first by locals, and often sport large amounts of graffiti and other acts of vandalism. Explorers face various risks in abandoned structures including collapsing roofs and floors, broken glass, guard dogs, the presence of chemicals, other harmful substances, most notably asbestos, hostile squatters and sometimes motion detectors. Some explorers wear respirators to protect their airways.
Exploration targets vary from one country to another, but some of the more popular or high-profile abandonments include amusement parks, grain elevators, factories, missile silos, hospitals, asylums, schools, and sanatoriums. Also, due to a marked lack of governmental support of historical monuments under many regimes, some structures may be centuries old, from various architectural epochs and still freely accessible in their unrenovated states.
Many explorers of abandonments find the decay of uninhabited spaces to be beautiful; many of these explorers are also photographers. Some abandonments are heavily guarded with motion sensors and active security. Others are more easily accessible and carry less risk of discovery. Abandonments are also popular among history buffs, 'industrial archeologists,' 'ghost hunters' and fans of graffiti.
Another aspect of urban exploration is the practice of exploring active or in use buildings. This includes seeing secured or "member-only" areas, mechanical rooms, roofs, elevator rooms, abandoned floors and other normally unseen parts of such buildings. The term 'infiltration' is often associated with the exploration of active structures. People entering restricted areas may be committing trespass and civil prosecution may result.
The rise in the popularity of urban exploration can be attributed to its increased media attention. Recent television shows, such as "Urban Explorers" on the Discovery Channel, MTV's Fear, and the ghost hunting exploits of The Atlantic Paranormal Society have packaged the hobby for a popular audience. Talks and exhibits on urban exploration have appeared at the 5th and 6th Hackers on Planet Earth Conference, complementing numerous newspaper articles and interviews. With the rise in the relative popularity of the hobby due to this increased focus, there has been increasing discussion on whether the extra attention has been beneficial to urban exploration as a whole.
Urban exploration is a hobby that comes with a number of inherent dangers. Storm water drains are not designed with human access as their primary use. They can be subject to flash flooding and bad air. There have been a number of deaths in storm water drains, but these are usually during floods, and are normally not urban explorers.
Many old abandoned structures feature hazards such as unstable structures, unsafe floors, asbestos, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, exposed electrical wires and entrapment hazards.[citation needed]
Asbestos is a long term health risk for urban explorers, along with breathing in contaminants from pigeon feces. Urban explorers use dust masks and respirators to alleviate this danger. Some sites are occasionally used by homeless people and drug users and there may be discarded needles.
The growing popularity of the activity has resulted not just in increased attention from explorers, but also from vandals and law enforcement. The illicit aspects of urban exploring, which may include trespassing and breaking and entering, have brought along with them critical articles in mainstream newspapers.
